Brockley Open Studios is happy to present the works of three female artists based in Brockley. The title of this show “Letting it go” came from a conversation between the artists about their experience as female artists at different stages of their lives. Their art practices are disparate in nature as they use different materials which are situated in different genres. However, the process of relinquishing in order to keep artists' practice going by “Letting go” is a thread running through these artists' works.

Sarah Crossfield’s semi-abstract works suggest a form gently peeling away and falling from the place where it was originally placed, reflecting  her experience as a mother and artist who is keenly aware of the fallibility of ambitions and desires tied up with responsibility and the ephemerality of our existence and environment. Hülya Corty’s photographic prints deal with the idea of surrendering and by the process of capturing through the lens she is re-discovering balance. Kaori Homma’s works physically materialise the process of un-doing as she burns her art works on paper. This method is called Aburidashi in Japanese which was used in espionage in the past and works are made visible only by letting it through the burning process.

“Letting it go” is not necessarily an easy nor painless process when our lives are complicated by work, relationships and our own self-imposed ideas and expectations. But we hope these artists' works can resonate with anyone who passes this corridor who might also be grappling with the idea of “Letting go”.
