MARY RODRIGUEZ
I work across different media including drawing, sculpture and ceramics. The work explores ideas from art history, archaeology, ancient civilisations and ruination, with a focus on the often hidden or forgotten female experience. Soft sculptures ape the forms of classical 'high art' whilst subverting them through the use of 'domestic' low value materials, recycled textiles and natural dyes. Soft, flaccid pillars hint at collapsing world structures, hierarchies are reversed, what is hard becomes soft and vice versa. Soft plinths support Feet of Clay, everyday consumerism transforms into hard monumental objects. Serious ideas about power dynamics lurk beneath the playful presentation of objects and hint at alternative narratives.
