FABRIQ Gallery

JULY 2025

FABRIQ GALLERY X BROCKLEY OPEN STUDIOS COLLABORATION

SCROLL ON

An exhibition of sculpture by artist and Goldsmith’s graduate Nick Cowan.

Exhibition opened from 1 - 31 July 2025 including the Brockley Open Studios weekend 5-6 July.

'Scroll On is a selection of work that explores human imperfections in relation to our ubiquitous phones. The paradox we find ourselves in now is that we are constantly connected while feeling increasingly disconnected. The figures in Scroll On are frozen captives of their devices, their bodies hollow shells that mimic our own absent-mindedness as we spend countless hours scrolling slop.'

FABRIQ Gallery is situated in the Michigan Launderette, 197 Brockley Road, SE4 2RS

FRAGMENts

JULY 2025

Featuring Emma Hughes and Sian Hoolahan

Emma and Sian invite you to explore how fragments of extinction - of balance and feeling - can be gathered, layered, and reimagined through art. Sian’s sculptures are surreal and poetic collages, hand built from clay and reused materials, while Emma’s paintings capture the vanishing beauty of endangered species in vibrant strokes.

Theatre of Sisyphus is an installation and photographic series that explores the theme of “Absurdism”, a philosophical school of thought. This series that was created in response to Albert Camus’s essay “The Myth of Sisyphus”, which presents to us the philosophy of Absurdism. Singh was inspired by his ideas on how to approach life according to the ‘absurd’ philosophy. Camus argues that life is essentially meaningless, although humans continually try to impose order on existence and to look for answers to the unanswerable questions.

Camus talks about various different ways to deal with life and ultimately rejects them, which Singh has employed in her photographic series. His suggested ways are: distraction, denial, pretension, to be an artist or to get political or just accepting life everyday as it comes without being on the quest to finds its inherent value. She has placed two characters in her story who find another “object” which is metaphorical to ‘life’ itself and the two main characters follow Camus’s ideas of dealing with it. All artworks are inspired by the storytelling technique of the “theatre of absurd”. Hence the objective of this show is to accept that it is best to live life in full knowledge of its pointlessness!

A New FOCUS: PLAYFUL

28 June - 2 July 2023, The Pop Up Shop, Brockley Cross, SE4 2AA

Brockley Open Studios is delighted to present our next exhibition ‘A New Focus: Playful’. A show that explores the role of play and experimentation in the creative process; where the artists share a belief or trust in the making process as an enquiry, a delight in discovery, 'what if' and 'how about' rather than a straight line towards final outcome. The objects selected may demonstrate features such as an emphasis on materiality, the tactility of matter, a rhythm or repetition of motif. Together they form a dialogue about the ways artists use play to open up new avenues or ways of working, on the journey to create resolved pieces.

Three contemporary artists will be showing a range of print, sculpture and painting:

RENEWAL

May-July 2023, &Osteo, 179 Brockley Road, SE4 2RS

Our second event is a conversation between the work of three artists exploring the concept of ‘renewal’:

Bella Easton www.bellaeaston.com

Lulu Ditzel www.luluditzel.art

Jane Merriman @merrimanjane

Some of the pieces exemplify how the natural world flourishes and renews, even in the harshest conditions. Others contemplate the cycle of urban change and regeneration or examine the hidden/obsolete uncovered in a process of restoration and revitalisation. For more information about our artists work see above.

Thank you to our kind hosts &Osteo for our second installation in their lovely space.

LETTING IT GO

Until 30 April 2023, at &Osteo, Brockley

The works of three female artists based in Brockley. The title of this show “Letting it go” came from a conversation between the artists about their experience as female artists at different stages of their lives. Their art practices are disparate in nature as they use different materials which are situated in different genres. However, the process of relinquishing in order to keep artists' practice going by “Letting go” is a thread running through these artists' works.
